THE 2017 “Friends Of Rugby” organised South West Rugby League comprising of eight clubs of two divisions playing six matches each ended over the weekend at the pitch of the National Institute for Sports, the National Stadium, Lagos with the last four matches at the centralised venue.
Defending champions Cowrie Rfc were held to a 3-all draw by a hard fighting Racing Rfc. Police Rfc walked over Lagos Rfc, Gosar Rfc defeated Eco 2 Rfc by 17 points to nil, and Panthers Rfc beat Dragons Rfc by 14 points to nil.
Cowrie Rfc won the league with 24 points, followed by Police Rfc with 15 points, Racing Rfc were third with 14 points, Lagos Rfc had no point. In Division II, Gosar Rfc were tops with 21points, followed by Panthers Rfc with 18 points, in third position is Eco 2 Rfc with 9 points and Dragons Rfc had 5 points.
At the end of the league, Gosar Rfc who topped the Division II gained promotion to Division I, while Lagos Rfc were relegated to Division II. Dragons Rfc was also relegated from the league for 2018.
Trophies and cash prizes were given to the winners and all the participating teams by the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation President Mr Kelechi Mbagwu, with a promise of a better 2018 National Rugby League with a title sponsor.
