In a bid to produce more qualitative professional accountants in Onitsha and its environs in Anambra State, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Onitsha and District Society, has said it is shopping for the sum of N100 million for the construction of a befitting ICAN institute.
To realize the said amount, ICAN has fixed February 28 as date for an event to raise funds for the project.
This disclosure was made by Chief (Sir) Kevin Obieri Agujiegbe, who is the Chairman of the Planning Committee while briefing newsmen on the extent of preparations.
“We want to set up an institution, a monument where people can come in, get assistance, resources to advance their career in accountancy. I mean to have a place that is segregated for that purpose, open for everybody like in Abuja and Lagos where people can come for, to download or make a check.
“In Lagos young people go on excursion to the NBA National Headquarters among others and get ideas on how to become professionals.
“In Onitsha here we have factories, industries that are thriving but no records. We want our young men who could not go to university direct because of financial constraints to get means of help here instead of remaining frustrated at home before you know it he has joined business.
“From here they will survive and later they can still get degree certificate”.
On whether the institute requires any assistance from the state government, he said: “Governor Willie Obiano is our member and can give us land in any choice location for the building of the ICAN edifice and equip it with computers, books and other office items.”
According to him, the chairman of the occasion is HRH Igwe Orann Chris Chidume of Omor while Lady Adaora chukwudozie who is the Managing Directress of Dozie Group of Companies, Onitsha, is the co-chairman.
Also to grace the occasion are the Obi of Onitsha, HRM Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, who will be the Father of the Day and Chief Alex Chika Okafor, Chief Launcher while the Chief Host, Alhaji Ismaila Mohammadu Zakari will be within reach.
“Government can as well send their accountants there for training because some of them are not trained. People still have options in life”.
