Thousands of members of All Progressives Congress (APC), Ebonyi State chapter have embarked on a protest match against the visit of the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Oyegun, calling for his removal over alleged complicity in the leadership crisis rocking the state chapter of the party.
Oyegun visited the state to receive defectors from Labour Party into the party.

Those received by Oyegun included the immediate past governor of Ebonyi state, Chief Martin Elechi and former caretaker committee chairman of Ebonyi Local Government area, Chief AnselemEnigwe and over 100 others.

The protesters lamented that in spite of the court injunction restraining the National chairman from tampering with the state congress, which elected Ben Nwobasi as the state chairman of the party, Oyegun appointed the  state deputy chairman, EzeNwachukwu as Acting chairman of the party in the state.

The protesters including women and youths  carried placards with inscriptions such as, “Oyegun is causing crisis in Ebonyi APC”, “Oyegun is a trouble maker”, “Oyegun has lost his relevance in APC”, “Oyegun should resign”, “Onu has no political value in Ebonyi”, “APC under Nwobashi’s leadership is formidable”, “we will continue to support APC despite Oyegun’s  antics,” among others.

The protesters who marched through the major streets of Abakaliki were seen chanting anti-Oyegun and OgbonnayaOnu songs with a call for the leadership of the party to immediately remove him from office forhis highhandedness and acts inconsistent with his office.

The protesters noted that the state executive committee of the party was not aware of any visit by the national chairman and would not want anything that would jeopardize the efforts of the leaders of the
party in the state in rebuilding the party ahead of the next general election.

Speaking during the protest, Spokesman of the group and NationalLeader of Ebonyi APC Youth Vanguard, Engr. Frank Ngwualleged thatOyegun and Onuare behind the leadership crisis in the party.

Ngwu said: “We make bold to state categorically that our nationalchairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun is behind the leadership crisis inEbonyi State chapter of the APC through inconsistent issuance ofdirectives.

When some moneybag visited him, he authored a letter on February 23, 2017appointing one EzeNwachukwu as the state ActingChairman. When contempt proceeding was served on him, he quicklyauthorized another letter on April 25 withdrawing his initial letter.

“And despite his letter of withdrawal, he is still relating withNwachukwuEze as the state Chairman. For instance, during the courtesyvisit to the Vice president, YemiOsibanjo by all the state chairmen of the party, Oyegun cleared Nwachukwu instead of Ben Nwobasi who isthe authentic chairman of the party.

“We can’t allow such character to come and cause mayhem in the statebecause of his double standards. We warned him to resolve the crisisbefore coming to Ebonyi state otherwise we will resist him from
stepping his foot into Ebonyi soil.

His leadership incompetence hasfurther exacerbated the crisis in our state chapter of APC and thishas endangered the strength of our party in the state. Rather than dissipating his energy to visit Ebonyi, he should expedite action tosee that the cases still pending in the court are resolved to itslogical conclusion. We can’t receive him when he has not done anything meaningful to resolve the court case.”
