NIGERIA has lost one of its internationally recognised scholars and foremost psychologist, Professor Shedrack Rex Uzoije Ugorji. He was 75 years old.
The erudite scholar, community leader, top administrator, philanthropist and former Commissioner in Imo and Abia States died in Lagos on 19 November 2017 after a very brief illness.
Dr. Rex (Jnr) Ugo Ugorji said the death of his father was a rude shock and colossal loss to Abia, Nigeria and humanity. He noted that the late professor had a huge wealth of knowledge to unload before his flight to glory.
The late Ugorji had an enviable credential of multiples degrees obtained from the Ivy league institutions including Yale University in the United States of America; University of Manchester (England), University of Toronto (Canada).
As an educator, Ugorji lectured in several institutions overseas and in Nigeria. They include: Yale University (USA); Brandon University (Canada); Boston College and The Kings College both in U.S. among others.
In Nigeria he lectured at the University of Nigeria Nsukka; Ebonyi State University where he was Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Nasarawa State University. He was visiting lecturer to uncountable institutions.
Ugorji also held several administrative positions such as Special Adviser to the Hon Minister, Ministry of Police Affairs in 1993. He was Commissioner of Information in Imo and later Abia State where he made visible positive contributions.
The multi-talented gem, Ugorji was a charismatic amiable orator, public speaker, executive master of ceremony whose jokes were extra-ordinary, a linguist, drummer and celebrated footballer and minister of the Almighty God.
Tributes have continued to flow from his many admirers.
First Military Administrator, Abia State, Air Vice Marshal (rtd) Frank O. Ajobena described the late Ugorji who was his Commissioner for Education, Information Youth and Sports in1991 as a rare gem. “He made several intelligent and meaningful contributions in putting the then new state on sound footing… Abia State and the Nigerian nation have lost a rare gem and an academician per excellence!”
Funeral service for Dr. Ugorji holds at Vaults & Gardens Chapel, FRCN Drive, Ikoyi, Lagos on Saturday 13 January 2018 at 10am.
The late Ugorji is survived by wife Dr. Ebby Uzo Ugorji, daughter Dr. Chika Ugorji, and so Dr Rex Ugo Ugorji (Jnr).
