The Rivers Police Command says it has mapped out strategies to secure lives and property in the state before and during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The Command Spokesman, Mr Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), made the promise in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
“There is always an upsurge in crime rate during festive periods,” he said.
According to him, the command has tightened security at all the entry and exit points in the state.
Omoni said police vehicular and foot patrols have been intensified, while police personnel are stationed at strategic locations in the state.
The spokesman said that security on the waterways has also been beefed up with five gunboats allocated to marine police.
There have been incessant complaints, of recent, from residents in the coastal areas about activities of sea pirates.
The police promised that all the residents, either on land or on waterways, would be adequately protected during and after the festivities.
Omoni said that criminals would want take advantage of the Yuletide if the police failed to intensify security.
He appealed to the public to furnish the command with useful information that could lead to arrest of criminals in their neighbourhood.
