From BONIFACE OKORO, Umuahia:
Abia State government has conducted the 2018 Annual Promotion Examinations for 1, 675 public servants in the state, saying that the exercise was to test their knowledge and suitability for their positions and offices, not to humiliate anyone.
Of the 1, 675 public servants that sat for the examinations, 941 were for promotions, while 332 and 422 were for confirmations and conversions, respectively. The participants were drawn from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs)
Addressing qualified senior public servant s who sat for the examinations, the State Head of Service (HoS), Sir Onyii Wamah, said the examination was necessary to ascertain whether they were operating within the stipulated civil service guidelines, as well as re-awaken their consciousness to the challenges ahead.
Wamah reiterated Governor Ikpeazu’s irrevocable commitment to prioritize the welfare of workers and urged them to exhibit high level of responsibility in the discharge of their duties and shun acts capable of truncating government policies and programmes.
The HoS wished the candidates good luck but charged them to be disciplined and demonstrate maturity and decorum.
He also commended members of the Public Service Examination Board for their unwavering commitment and thoroughness in conducting the exercise.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Establishments and Pensions, Mr. Okechukwu Ihedioha, praised the HoS for his efforts geared towards restoring the lost glory of the service, while advising the participants to be serious as they would be rated according to their performances.
Ihedioha applauded the Ikpeazu administration’s resolve not to mortgage the promotions and welfare of Abia workers and called on them to reciprocate the governor’s gesture by showing unwavering support, loyalty, while making honesty and accountability their watchword.
The Perm Sec. advocated for regular training and re-training of Abia workers, particularly in professional areas, so as to ensure productivity in their respective fields of service.
