2022 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria beat France 1-0
Nigeria’s female U-20 national football team, the Falconets, early Friday morning, beat France Women by 1-0 to open their campaign in the 2022 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup on a positive note.
The match played at 12midnight Nigeria time was the first in the Group C for Nigeria in a competition which officially kicked of Wednesday in Costa Rica.
The competition which officially kicked off with shockingly beat Germany 1-0, while New Zealand played a 1-1 draw with Mexico at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela.
On Thursday, Spain played a goalless draw with Brazil, while Australia defeated hosts, Costa Rica by 3-1 at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica in San Jose.
Falconets reached the World Cup after beating he likes of Central African Republic, Congo, Cameroon and Senegal with Flourish Sebastine and Mercy Idoko playing crucial roles as they contributed 12 goals for the Falconets.
An 82nd minute goal scored by the number 9, Flourish Sebastine saw the Falconets claim all three points in the crucial tie against one of Europe’s toughest teams, France.
The Falconets with three points now top the Group C.
The French team did get a goal ruled out after the VAR adjudged a foul on the Falconets’ goalkeeper in the build-up.
The Falconets next match is against South Korea, on August 14, after which Canada follows, August 17.
