2023: Thousands rally for Peter Obi in Nasarawa
Thousands of residents Nasarawa State, Saturday, trooped out of their homes to participate in a rally in support of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate in the 2923 General Elections, Dr Peter Obi.
The supporters marched through major streets of Lafia, the state capital, Saturday morning chanting solidarity songs.
Obi, through the help of his LP’s Vice Presidential candidate, Dr Datti Yusuf Baba-Ahmed is said to be gaining huge support in the northern regions of the country.
Datti is from Kaduna State, in the North West region.
Obi is among three leading candidates in the 2023 Presidential poll, including Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar of the main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Official political campaigns have yet to kick off, according to the timeline provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), however, supporters of Obi have continued to stage statewide rallies on their own, even without the permission of the Labour Party.
Saturday’s rally in Lafia was organized by a coalition of over 56 support groups from the 13 Local Government Areas of Nasarawa.
Tagged; the ‘One-Million March for Obi’, the supporters marched from the College of Agriculture junction along Jos Road to the U-turn linking the Lafia main market along the Makurdi Road, waving banners and placards in support of the Labour Party candidate.
Remarking, Secretary of the coalition, Wilson Kingsley, said the participating support groups include; the Peter Obi Candidacy Movement, Women for Peter Obi, Peter Obi Support Network, Peter Obi Ambassadors, Like Minds for Peter Obi, TakeBackNaija, Nigeria Needs Peter Obi, Peter Obi movement for President, Associates of Peter Obi, among others.
“These one million supporters are those who belong to the registered 56 groups across the 13 LGAs of the state. We are not campaigning at the moment because the Independent National Electoral Commission has not given a go-ahead. What we are doing today is a march to declare our support for Mr. Peter Obi.
“We are supporting him because we believe that he has the capacity and ability to take Nigeria to greater heights. We are tired of all the politicians who deceive us every election year, telling us that they will provide good governance but they never fulfill their promises,” he said.
