Unilag reopens after 6-week closure over Covid-19 scare

Management of the University of Lagos, Akoka in Yaba, has directed reopening of the institution following its closure due to a Covid-19 scare, last month.

According to a statement release to students, the school is now to reopen for full academic studies from Thursday, August 26.

The release titled, ‘Important notice: Schedule of accommodation of bonafide students with allocated bedspaces in hostels for second semester 2019-2020 in-person examination,’ also approved the commencement of the second semester examinations physically on campus.

It would be re called that following a report by the University of Lagos (Unilag) Medical Centre confirming a spike in patients admitted to its facility with the Covid-19 infections, the institution promptly shut down academic activities as it directed students to vacate the campuses with immediate effect.

The Medical Centre which is one of the approved facilities for handling Covid-19 treatment and management by the Lagos Government, said in a statement released that it feared a third wave of the infection in the state following the detection of the Delta variant of the virus, also in the state, last week. “The University of Lagos Medical Centre wishes to inform all members of the University of Lagos Community about what appears to be the start of a potential 3rd wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Lagos State.

“The University of Lagos community has also been affected by this potential 3rd wave, with an increase in the number of patients presented to the University of Lagos Medical Centre with flu-like symptoms which are similar to COVID-19.

“The Medical Centre hereby assures all members of the University community, that all necessary actions in line with the Federal and Lagos State Government guidelines have been taken regarding this potential threat in our community,” the statement said.

It also added that: “The Medical Centre will also return to providing emergency only services during this period, in order to protect all members of the community from potential infection within the facility.

However, with the expected resumption of the institution, for next week, the authorities have also permitted physical lectures to be conducted on the campuses.

“On the authority of Senate, the University presents this schedule to accommodate legal occupants in the hostels for the In-Person 2nd semester 2019-2020 examinations.

“Eligible Students are expected to abide strictly by the schedule and guidelines for admittance into the Halls of Residence.

“(They) must be registered for the 2nd semester 2019-2020 session, present coloured Exam Docket for 2nd semester 2019-2020 Exams, present a bottle of hand sanitizer (Minimum of 500ml), present at least 10 face masks, wear face mask into and out of the hostels at all times, must use their allocated bed spaces.

“The Schedule for accommodation for examinations is as follows: 100 and 200-level students with allocated bed space should move into the hostels from Thursday 26 August 2021 and depart on or before Saturday 11 September 2021.

“500-level Faculty of Law Students with allocated bed space should move into their hostels on Saturday 28 August and depart on Sunday 5 September 2021.

“300-level students with allocated bed space should move into their hostels on Saturday 11 September and depart on Saturday 18 September 2021.

“400 and 500-level students with allocated bed space should move into their hostels on Saturday 18 September and depart on Sunday 26 September 2021,” the statement read.

“Extant rules and regulations with associated penalties for hostel residency are still applicable and must be obeyed by all students.”
