Police confirm kidnap of Akwa Ibom senator in Uyo

State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of Senator Nelson Effiong.
Senator Effiong represented Akwa Ibom South during the 8th Senate and was a former Speaker of the state House of Assembly.
Odiko Macdon, the State Police Spokesman said the command has been briefed about the incident.
“The Command has received that information, and the CP (Commissioner of Police) has ordered an investigation into the matter.
“I believe that in no distant time we will get more information on it. But as I speak, yes, we have received that report and we are working to ensure he can be rescued.”
Macdon revealed that Commissioner of Police, Amiengheme Andrew, has ordered immediate investigation of the matter.
He assured that the Police will work assiduously to secure the safe release of the victim.
Effiong is an entrepreneur and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
It would be recalled that Sunday night, gunmen said to be numbering about three stormed an Uyo sit -out spot, abducting the immediate past Senator who representing Akwa Ibom South.
Effiong, a former member of the state House of Assembly was said to have been hanging out with friends and associates when the gunmen struck, shooting into the air, with some customers at the spot sustaining gunshot injuries, as the gunmen reportedly went straight for the senator and driving off with him in their Toyota Camry car.
The incident which occurred at about 9pm in Uyo has already been confirmed by the State Police Command.
The gunmen stormed the spot said to be owned by the former lawmaker and reportedly drove off to an unknown destination with the senator.
During the commotion, eight of the patrons present at the hangout site on Sunday sustained various degrees of injuries during the stampede that ensued when the gunmen fired sporadically before abducting the senator.
“I have just been shot been shot along Oron Road,” Erick Ekwere, one of the victims narrated on social media.
“The incident occurred at about 9:00 p.m on Sunday night. The armed men stormed the sit-out with a Toyota Camry car and started shooting sporadically at random, sending the customers and other guests to scamper for safety before they made straight to the former Senator,” a source added.
