NGX: Investors record N7.16bn loss as ASI dips by -0.03%
Equities market closed on a negative note, as NGXASI depreciated by -0.03% to close at 42,230.48 basis points as against -0.34% depreciation recorded previously. Its Year-to-Date (YTD) returns currently stands at +4.87%.
Market breadth closed positive as UBN led 14 Gainers as against 11 Losers topped by JBERGER at the end of today’s session – an unimproved performance when compared with previous outlook.
Market turnover closed negative as volume moved down by -5.77% as against -18.81% downtick recorded in the previous session. UBN, SOVRENINS and GUARANTY were the most active to boost market turnover. UACN and GUARANTY topped market value list.

At the end of today’s trading session on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX), a total of 211,089,688 shares in 2,815 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 2,464,456,558.29, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Wednesday, December 22), today’s data shows 6% decline in volume, 7% decline in turnover, but 5% improvement in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 22 trillion.
In the aggregate, 95 NGX equities participated in trading, ending with 14 gainers and 11 losers. Union Bank Nigeria led the gainers with 9.78% share price appreciation closing at NGN 5.05 per share, followed by Royal Exchange (+7.14%), Mutual Benefits Assurance (+6.67%) and Eterna (+6%). On the losing side, Julius Berger Nigeria came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 9.88% at NGN 22.35 per share, followed by UPDC (-5.6%), Sovereign Trust Insurance (-4%) and FBN Holdings (-2.5%). UAC of Nigeria (UACN) recorded the highest volume of 65 million traded shares, followed by Sovereign Trust Insurance (23.3m), Guaranty Trust Holding (21.1m) and Jaiz Bank (14.9m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 13.74 (-0.03%) points to close at 42,230.48, representing a 1-week loss of 0.09%, a 4-week loss of 2.04%, but an overall year-to-date gain of 4.87%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (-0.06%; -0.19% 1WK; +3.56% YTD), NGX Top 50 Index (-0.15%; +0.22% 1WK; +2.06% YTD), NGX Premium Index (-0.19%; -0.39% 1WK; +16.4% YTD), NGX Oil & Gas Index (+1.1%; -0.63% 1WK; +54.2% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+0.52%; -1.11% 1WK; -0.03% YTD), and NGX Insurance Index (+0.36%; +2.21% 1WK; +2.37% YTD).
