NASS workers in Abuja block entrance to complex in protest over unpaid salary arrears
National Assembly (NASS) workers in Abuja, Monday, shut down activities at the complex as they blocked the entrance lobby in a protest over non-payment of their salaries and other allowances by management as earlier agreed by both parties.
This is also as the National Assembly Service Commission has summoned an emergency meeting to address the workers’ demands.
The visibly agitated workers, Monday, displayed placards carrying their demands like, ‘Pay Us Our MOU’ and blocked the entrances into the building chanting solidarity songs, even as they promised to continue the protest on Tuesday if their demands are not met.
The protesters, under the auspices of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) had last Thursday notified the Department of State Service (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force of their intention to commence an industrial strike and picket the federal parliament on Monday.
They accused the management of the National Assembly of failing to honour a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between parties which included demands such as; payment of 50 percent balance of Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS); five months CONPECULIAR allowances; immediate release of Year 2022 Training Template and evidence of provision of gratuity for retiring staff; end of the year bonus; and payment of promotion arrears to deserving workers.
The protesters also vowed picket the National Assembly Service Commission on Tuesday.
Meanwhile armed operatives of the DSS and police have taken over the security architecture of complex to avoid the breakdown of law and order.
