Ikpeazu dissolves board of Abia electoral commission
[From BONIFACE OKORO, Umuahia]
Abia Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, Friday, directed the immediate dissolution of the board of the State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC).
The board comprises Commissioners whose appointments elapsed at the end of their tenure.
However, Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mkpa Agua Mkpa; and the Administrative Secretary, were not affected by the dissolution.
Ikpeazu’s decision to sack the ABSIEC board was contained in a terse statement released in Umuahia by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Chris Ezem.
The two-paragraph statement read: “The Governor of Abia State, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, has approved the immediate dissolution of Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) (board).
“However, this Government directive is without prejudice to the positions of the Chairman and the Administrative Secretary of the commission respectively, whose tenure in office still subsist.”
Mkpa was nominated by the Governor on March 6, 2020 and was inaugurated about a week later, following his successful screening by the State House of Assembly.
Shortly after assuming office, Mkpa was mandated by the state government to commence preparations for the conduct of local Government elections which eventually held on December 19, 2020, the second in the Ikpeazu administration.
