Reps begin probe into petrol consumption, state of refineries in Nigeria
House of Representatives has moved to investigate petroleum products consumption in the country, as it noted that it was necessary to determine the actual figures before addressing the issue of subsidy removal.
The lawmakers who disclosed this during plenary, Wednesday, also said they would re-examine the state of refineries across the country.
Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, to this end, set up two ad hoc committees of the House to conduct the separate investigations.
“We can’t talk about subsidy without knowing how much we consume,” said Speaker Gbajabiamila, who explained that the House has commenced an internal probe to determine how much petrol is consumed in the country daily.
According to the Speaker, the House is also investigating the state of the country’s four refineries in a bid to make recommendations on how to ‘bring them back to life.’
The Speaker, therefore, announced constituting two adhoc committees during Wednesday’s plenary in Abuja to conduct the separate investigations, as he noted that figures on fuel consumption in the country were conflicting and difficult to bet on their accuracy.
Gbajabiamila also informed that before the House would address the issue of subsidies on petrol, it would first determine the daily fuel consumption figures.
