New salary structure for police officers ‘will soon take effect’ – IGP
Amid growing fears of a strike action by junior officers in the force, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Alkali Baba Usman, has assured personnel in the Lagos State Command that the recently approved salary increment by President Muhammadu Buhari will soon take effect.
The IGP also informed officers that relevant government agencies including the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) and the Ministry of Police Affairs have reached final stages of computation of emolument details of all personnel of the Force.
Speaking through the Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) in charge of Research & Planning and Supervising DIG for the South West geopolitical zone, Johnson Babatunde Kokumo, at a police function in Lagos, Wednesday, the IGP equally assured members of the Force that the issue of promotion ‘is being looked into to ensure that deserving members of the Force get elevated accordingly.’
Remarking, Lagos Commissioner of Police, CP Abiodun Alabi, on behalf of officers and men of State Command appreciated the IGP for allaying the fears and doubts of his officers and pledged a renewed dedication to duty.
Police officers in the lower cadre of the force had issued a two-week notice of strike which expires March 26, even as they threatened to down tools, over their demand for a 20 per cent salary increase, which they claimed had long been approved by President Buhari with the police high command failing to implement the new structure.
