Kaduna airport invasion: Reps demand investigation into attack by bandits
House of Representatives’ Minority Caucus has demanded an urgent and comprehensive investigation into the remote and immediate circumstances leading to invasion and takeover of the Kaduna International Airport by bandits on Saturday.
The Caucus also expressed shock over what it described as the apparent compromising of security at the airport that paved the way for the eventual invasion.
It would be recalled that on Saturday afternoon, a personnel of the Nigerian Airspace Management Authority (NAMA) was shot dead by bandits who scaled through the perimeter fence Kaduna airport from a nearby forest and started shooting to scare the workers.
The terrorists prevented an aircraft operated by Azman Air from taking off.
The Azman early afternoon flight was delayed by over an hour as security operatives from the Aviation Security AVSEC), operated by FAAN, troops from the nearby Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and police confronted the bandits.
The Azman aircraft with registration number 5N-HAI had arrived from Lagos at 12.36 and was due to return to same destination by 1.04 when its departure was halted due to the invasion of the Kaduna airport’s runway.
In a statement signed by the Minority Leader of the House, Ndudi Elumelu, the caucus urged the government to immediately beef up security in all the nation’s airports and other public convergence facilities so as to forestall a re-occurrence of such a terrifying attack.
“Airports, especially international airports across the world, are usually highly secured areas. Therefore, the circumstances that allowed for the invasion of the Kaduna International Airport speak volume about the security in the area,” the Statement added.
