48 widows receive grants from Abia lawmaker’s empowerment programme
Total of 48 widows, last Friday, smiled home with cash gifts, courtesy of the Okey Igwe Cash Empowerment Programme for Umunneochi Indigent Widows.
The programme is the initiative of the member representing Umunneochi State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Okey Igwe.
The 48 beneficiaries received cash from the support fund at the Umuogele Amuda Isuochi country home of Honorable Igwe, venue of the event.
Represented by Dr. Ken Madubuike, the lawmaker reiterated his commitment towards supporting the indigent and widows in the society.
Hon. Igwe used the opportunity to appreciate the widows for their constant prayers for him, noting that their prayers have been the force behind his progression, politically and otherwise.
In their separate speeches, some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains in Umunneochi eulogized Hon. Igwe for keeping faith with his avowed commitment in lifting the widows financially and assisting them to grow their businesses. They said that by sustaining the programme, Hon Igwe has practically demonstrated his love for widows and the indigent in the society.
The chieftains, including Chief George Iroh, Special Adviser to the Abia State Governor; Comr. V. C. Ngwu, Chief Amaobi Ocho, Mrs Obiageri Okeke, PDP woman Leader, Lokpaukwu Ward; Chief Luke Okoafor and Deacon Obinna Ezeobi, a former Deputy Chairman, Umunneochi LGA, who witnessed the cash disbursement, commended Hon. Igwe for his achievements so far and prayed God to see him through in his endeavors.
Representatives of the beneficiaries: Elizabeth Madu from Obiloru Ngodo, Zone 1; Ifenji Stephen, from Mbala, Zone 2; Nwankwo Edith, from Ubahu, Zone 3; and Cecilia Stephen, Lekwesi, Zone 4; speaking on behalf of other widows, thanked Honorable Okey Igwe for his love for the widows and prayed that God would continue to bless him abundantly.
Highlight of the event was disbursement of money to the 48 widows to assist them in their petty trading; as well as special prayers by the widows for Honorable Igwe, even as they testified of the impact of the support fund on their various families.
Coordinator of the Okey Igwe’s Cash Empowerment Programme for Umunneochi Indigent Widows, Dr. A.I. Uwaezuoke, urged the widows to ensure effective utilization of the fund, promising that two months of the stipend await them.
