NGX: equities market return to positive territory with N346b gain, ASI inches up by +1.24%
Trading activities on the Nigerian equities market ended with gains on Wednesday as the market rebounded from two days of consecutive losses.
The market capitalisation rose by N346 billion to close the day at N28,352 trillion compared with N28,006 trillion on Tuesday.
Similarly, the all share index appreciated by 1.24 per cent or 641.77 points to close trading at 52,591.41 as against 51,949.64 recorded on Tuesday.
At the end of today’s trading session , a total of 382,455,077 shares in 5,922 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 4,233,964,109.58, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Tuesday, May 24), today’s data shows 47% decline in volume, 52% decline in turnover, and 3% decline in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 28.4 trillion.
In the aggregate, 109 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 11 gainers and 41 losers. Chams led the gainers with 9.52% share price appreciation closing at NGN 0.23 per share, followed by Airtel Africa (+9.39%), FTN Cocoa Processors (+6.06%) and Veritas Kapital Assurance (+4.76%). On the losing side, McNichols came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 10% at NGN 1.98 per share, followed by Champion Breweries (-10%), PZ Cussons Nigeria (-9.92%) and Regency Alliance Insurance (-9.68%). UAC of Nigeria recorded the highest volume of 48.2 million traded shares, followed by United Bank for Africa (31.9m), Access Holdings (30.7m) and FBN Holdings (30.6m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) increased by 641.77 (1.24%) points to close at 52,591.41, representing a 1-week loss of 0.25%, a 4-week gain of 8.34%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 23.12%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (-0.84%; -3.96% 1WK; +13.9% YTD), NGX Top 50 Index (-1.06%; -2.71% 1WK; +13.01% YTD), NGX Main Board Index (+2.88%; +4.07% 1WK; +30.08% YTD), NGX Industrial Index (-0.4%; -0.94% 1WK; +12.98% YTD), NGX Premium Index (-0.73%; -5.12% 1WK; +18.89% YTD), and NGX Oil & Gas Index (-0.76%; -0.97% 1WK; +59.94% YTD).
