Hopes of Chief Samuel Ifeanyi Onuigbo becoming a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria brightened Tuesday, May 31, 2022, as he was declared the winner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election organised to elect its candidate for Abia State Central Senatorial seat.
Onuigbo, currently the Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, was declared winner following a run-off election which took place in Umuahia on Sunday, May 29, 2022.
The primary election was first held on Saturday, May 28, 2022 but was declared inconclusive.
The federal lawmaker got 157 votes to defeat his rival, Chief Henry Ikoh, who polled 152 votes.
Of the 318 delegates accredited to participate in the primary election, 309 votes were valid while the remaining 9 were void.
Sen. Nkechi Nwaogu had earlier withdrawn from the primary election on Saturday, citing irregularities.
Hon. Onuigbo while reacting to the outcome of the highly competitive primary election, expressed gratitude to the leadership of Abia APC for providing a level playing field for the aspirants, as well as the delegates, for voting for him.
The Ikwuano-born politician also expressed gratitude to those who have supported him, including the APC governorship candidate in the state, High Chief Ikechi Emenike, and the entire Abians.
He pledged to continue to deliver outstanding democracy dividends that have endeared him to the people of his Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency.
