CVR: INEC confirms deploying additional 209 registration machines in South East, Lagos, Kano
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed deploying an additional 209 registration machines to five states in South East region, as well as, Lagos and Kano, for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise going on across the country.
The South East region which has returned the least number of registered voters in the CVR exercise since its commencement, last year, ahead of the 2023 general elections, is also challenged by high level of insecurity and violent attacks, mostly targeted at officials of the commission, as the deadline for the CVR draws to an end.
INEC explained that the decision to deploy more machines was in response to the unprecedented surge in the number of citizens that wish to register as voters.
INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, said these in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.
“The commission is aware of the challenges faced by citizens across the country, hence the deployment,” the commission said.
Okoye said in some states, the sudden turnout of prospective registrants is overwhelming.
“Consequently, the commission convened an urgent meeting with all the Resident Electoral Commissioners on Thursday 9, to review the situation so that eligible Nigerians who wish to register are able to do so.
“The necessity to urgently deploy more voter enrolment machines to ease the congestion at the registration centres was identified as a priority.”
