WAFCON 2022: Kanu scores brace, as Super Falcons thrash Burundi 4-0 to reach Q/F
Nigeria’s female national team, the Super Falcons have set up a quarter final meeting against Cameroon after thrashing Burundi side by 4-0 in a one-sided encounter played in Rabat, Morocco in the ongoing Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The match played, late Sunday night, had kicked off 9pm Nigerian time.
The Super Falcons continued their winning streak with the latest victory after returning to winning ways, last Thursday, by beating Botswana 2-0.
The Nigerian side had opened their competition account on a sour note following a 1-2 loss to the Banyana Banyana of South Africa in the opening Group C match, last Monday.
However, the victory means Nigeria finish the group matches with six points in second position in the four-team grouping behind South Africa.
In the other match of Group C played simultaneously, South Africa defeated Botswana by 1-0 to finish on top of the table with the maximum nine points, while Botswana emerged as third best team and also making it also to the quarter finals.
The match was largely dominated by the Nigeria side, as the Super Falcons were clearly the superior side edging the Burundi team in all departments of the game.
By half time, scores stood at 3-0 in favour of the Super Falcons who had started scoring as early as the 25th minute through Rasheedat Ajibade via the penalty spot. Peace Efih made it 2-0 in the 28th minute, while Uchenna Kanu scored in the 29th minute to make it 3-0.
In the 38th minute, what would have been the fourth goal scored by Kanu was ruled out for offside. However, Kanu did eventually put the ball in the Burundi net for the fourth goal and her second in the match in the 46th minute to complete the rout at 4-0.
