Terrorists on rampage, attack Brigade of Guards in FCT, police headquarters, Akure
Emboldened terrorists operating in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, have ambushed soldiers attached to the Nigerian Army Brigade of Guards stationed in Abuja.
Troops of the elite Guards Brigade who were said to be on a routine patrol were reportedly ambushed along the Bwari-Kubwa road by the terrorists.
The military said the terrorists are believed to be laying siege to the Bwari area, probably preparing to attack the Nigerian Law School and the headquarters of the Joint and Matriculation Board (JAMB), all located in the area.
However, the attack was said to have been repelled by the troops, with about three troops sustaining various levels of injuries in the attack.
The Army said the injured troops are receiving treatment at the military hospital.
The Nigeria Army which later released a statement confirming the attack, said the incident occurred last Friday, July 22.
However, three soldiers were wounded in the attack and they are already being treated at a military hospital within Abuja.
The message attack titled ‘Ambush Attack Against Own Troops Of Gds Bde’ read: “At about 241620A Jul 22, own tps of 7 Gds Bn on routine ptl along Rd Kubwa – Bwari were ambushed by suspected terr. 3 x sldrs were injured during the attk. The sldrs have been evacuated to 7 Gds Bn MRS for med attn.
“Details on the extent of their injuries still under cfm. The ambushed attk happening within the gen area of Bwari shows that the terrs are actually within the loc and possibly to carry out their plans of attacking the law schl in Bwari as earlier reported.”
The Presidential Brigade of Guards is primarily tasked with protecting the country’s sat of power in Abuja.
In a related development, the police command in Ondo has confirmed the attack on its Okuta Elerinla Division Headquarters, in Akure South Local Government Area of the state.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Funmilayo Odunlali, in a statement issued on Monday in Akure, said that the attack on the police division resulted in the death of one of its personnel.
“On the 25th July, around 1:00a.m., hoodlums attacked Okuta Elerinla Division in Akure.
“Policemen who were at alert and alive to their duty repelled them accordingly and the miscreants were unable to gain entrance into the station.
“During the cross fire, one of our gallant station guards AP.2075380 Insp. Boluwaji Temenu was hit by a bullet, he later died on his way to the hospital,” she said.
Odunlali said that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Oyeyemi Oyediran, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case and ensure the perpetrators are arrested.
Meanwhile, CP Oyediran has urged people in the state to go about their lawful duty without fear, stressing that the masterminds and perpetrators of the attack would soon be arrested and prosecuted.
