Commonwealth Games: Taiwo wins fifth medal for Team Nigeria, claims silver in weightlifting
Weightlifter Laidi Taiwo has won a 5th medal for Team Nigeria at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, clinching a silver in the Women’s 76kg category, after a combined total lift of 216kg in snatch and clean & jerk.
Liadi also set a new Commonwealth Games Junior record in the process when she lifted 120kg in the clean and jerk to beat other 11 other competitors to the silver medal.
Team Nigeria have now won a total of two gold medals, tow bronze and one silver at the championship.
Adijat Olarinoye and Rafiat Lawal had the two gold medals, while Edidiong Umoafia and Islamiyat Adebukola Yusuf have clinched bronze, now Taiwo added a silver.
All the medals have been won at the weightlifting event.
However, the championship is yet to kickoff in Team Nigeria’s areas of strength like wrestling, track & field and Para weightlifting.
The XXII Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Birmingham 2022, is an international multi-sports event for members of the Commonwealth of Nations.
The Games which began on July 28 and is expected to climax on August 8, this year.
