Commonwealth Games: Team Nigeria’s Adekuoroye, Oborududu win gold, as Amusan zooms into 100m hurdles final
Women’s Freestyle wrestlers; Odunayo Adekuoroye and Blessing Oborududu have both won gold medals on Day 8 of the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
Oborududu defeated Linda Morais in the 68kg women’s category final on Friday.
Oborududu is now a two-time Commonwealth Games Champion having claimed the gold medal at the 2018 edition of the event.
Earlier same Friday, another wrestler Odunayo Adekuoroye successfully defended her title by clinching the gold medal at the event also in the wrestling event.
Adekuoroye won the gold in the Women’s 57kg Freestyle Wrestling after beating Anshu Malik of India.
Also on Friday, Esther Omolayo Kolawole won a bronze medal in the Women’s Wrestling 62kg event.
Team Nigeria have now bagged seven gold, two silver and seven bronze, totaling 15 medals.
Meanwhile, Team Nigeria’s world record holder in the 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, as expected, reached the final of the event as she clocked 12.40 seconds to win her semifinal heat at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham on Friday.
Her time of 12.40 seconds should have been a Commonwealth Games record but for the 2.4 m/s tail wind which denied her the feat.
The 25-year-old Nigerian had been tipped to break the 16-year-old 12.65 seconds Games record set by Jamaica’s Brigitte Foster-Hylton in Melbourne, Australia after running a new 12.12 seconds World record to win the world title in Oregon, USA last month.
Amusan will have another chance at having a go at the record in the final where she will also be eyeing history as the second woman in history to successfully defend a Commonwealth Games 100m hurdles title after Australian Sally Pearson did in 2014.
The Nigerian will face familiar foes in Saturday’s final including the Jamaican duo of Danielle Williams and Megan Tapper who edged Amusan to the bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships and the delayed Tokyo Olympics respectively.
The final race is billed for this Sunday.
