2023: Aspirants, parties to sign peace accord – NPC
In the countdown to the 2023 general elections, the National Peace Committee (NPC) has called on the Nigerian populace, and other key stakeholders in the elections to consider the interest of the country above individuals’ personal interests in the build-up to the elections.
All Presidential aspirants and their political party leaderships will be made to sign two peace accords, one next week and another before the kick-off of electioneering campaigns and shortly before the commencement of elections.
Also all political actors especially their Media handlers must adhere to the contents of the peace accord including; strict adherence to issue-based campaigns devoid of personal attacks on opponents, use of insulting and inciting words and avoid spreading fake news.
In January, they will also sign an agreement to accept the result of the election come 2023.
The Chairman of the committee, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, briefed the press after the committee meeting in conjunction with INEC held in Minna, Niger State on Thursday. He urged Nigerians to desist from selling their votes during the elections.
According to him, in this election period, two peace accords would be signed by the presidential candidates. They consist of the signing of an accord to accept the outcome of the result and to ensure rancor free and a fair campaign devoid of acrimony.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, Professor Mahmud Yakubu applauded the bold steps and involvement of the NPC in ensuring peaceful conduct of the 2023 general elections.
He stated that the Commission is set for the election ahead of the lifting of the campaign embargo.
The INEC boss noted that 8 out of 14 activities identified have been implemented and urged the media to ensure parties and candidates focussed on issue-based campaigns.
Also, the former Chief of Defense Staff, General Mathew Luther Agwai, hinted that the meeting has incorporated new members to bring new ideas and revitalized the committee to ensure best practices towards peace and getting the best leadership for the country.
The meeting has in attendance, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar; Archbishop Hassan Mathew Kuka, a former HOS, Yayale Ahmed among others.
