12 Calabar varsity lecturers die in nine months since strike – ASUU
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Calabar chapter, has confirmed the death of no fewer than 12 lecturers between January 2022 and September 2022 since the start of the industrial action embarked upon by the varsity teachers in February 14, this year.
This was confirmed by the Chairman of ASUU, University of Calabar chapter, Dr John Edor, who spoke in Calabar on Tuesday.
Dr. Edor, however, emphasised that the union will not relent until the government complied with ASUU’s demands, despite intimidation and disregard from the Federal Government.
According to him, they (lecturers) will not give in to hunger and intimidation but will cope with their losses and take the fight with the Federal Government to a logical end until their request is met.
“It is not correct that we lost 21 lecturers. The truth is we lost about 12 members of the union between the commencement of the strike (February 2022) and now (September 2022).
“The government has not provided a conducive environment devoid of all impediments. We will continue to cope with whatever losses we have had. We will continue to embrace all the hazards. We are not ready to give in because of hunger, intimidation or court action.
“We are ready to take this fight to a logical end until the necessary things are done which the government ought to do”, Edor reiterated.
According to university sources, the university repeatedly released obituary notices from the institution notifying the deaths and interment of the departed academics.
