SON approves 168 new product standards specifications
Governing Council of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has approved 168 new standards for publication and dissemination to various business sectors to enhance the ongoing economic diversification policy.
Director-General of SON, Malam Farouk Salim, who disclosed this during a press briefing ahead of the organisation’s 50th anniversary scheduled for, November 28, 2022, disclosed that presently, SON is structured to lead every process that surrounds the preparation of standards relating to products, measurements, materials, and processes among others, and their promotion at the national, regional, and international levels.
“Working within the provisions of the Enabling Act, SON under my leadership, has been able to, through the Standards Council, designate, establish, and approve standards in respect of metrology, materials, commodities, structures, and processes for the certification of products in commerce and industry throughout Nigeria.
“Upon assumption of duty in September, 2020, we have been able to achieve the following; Facilitated the return of SON to the Ports; Election of Nigeria into the standards management committee of the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO); Completion of the 2019/20 ARSO essay competition for undergraduates in Nigerian tertiary institutions and setting up of an independent 5-man committee to review and strengthen management practices in SON.
“To mark our Golden Jubilee, we have put together, a historical compendium of the last 50 years of our evolutionary journey as a regulatory Authority.” Salim said.
On celebrations lined up for the 50th anniversary, SON Director General noted that the event ‘is a moment of stock taking and introspection with a view to charting the course of giant strides into the future.’
He added that the celebration will include; book launch, exhibitions by companies with MANCAP, awards to deserving staff and companies who have distinguished themselves in strict adherence to SON ethical standards and regulatory framework.
