The Federal Government has opened second Niger bridge for temporary use.
The Minister of Works, Mr. Babatunde Fashola who spoke on Wednesday When he directed that the bridge be opened for temporary use, said the opening had put an end to an age-long problem.
According to him, during the period of temporarily opening, vehicles will access the road from Asaba end straight to Obosi Town and to Owerri and other states at the western axis of the bridge.
Fashola who explained the relief the opening will offer, said that the bridge would solve poverty problem as it would save hours travellers spend trying to cross the River Niger.
He said: “It is not a Bridge for grandstanding, so we said if it is motorable, let’s open it so that people will feel the impact.
“Let me say from the beginning that this is a temporary opening to relief a problem and we will like to get your feedback if you use it so that we know how best to do it.
“A lot of people have talked about the solution but Buhari administration offered it: that is, to build the bridge wherever the money comes from”.
Earlier, Mr. Martins Oluwaseyi, one of the site Engineers, said those plying the bridge heading to Obosi from Asaba interchange will not need to turn left but drive straight to Obosi Town.
The bridge, he said would be open from December 15 to January 1, when Obosi end will be opened for travellers to Asaba end.
“From January 3, 2023 to 15 January when traffic from from Asaba end, eases up, we will open the Obosi end so that travellers will end at Asaba”, Okuwaseyi said.
“The openings created for reversal of traffic will be closed so that work will continue on the project,” he added
