Old naira swap: Buhari meets with Emefiele at Aso Villa
President Muhammadu Buhari has received the Governor Godwin Emefiele of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
The meeting held hours after the Supreme Court, on Wednesday, ruled to stop the February 10 deadline for the validity of three old naira notes.
Recall that the Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara state government had filed a motion ex parte to stop the CBN from enforcing its naira redesign policy.
On Wednesday, a seven-person panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice John Okoro unanimously granted an interim injunction, extending the use of the old naira notes and cancelling the Central Bank of Nigeria deadline of 10 February 2023 for the phasing out of the old 200, 500, and 1000 naira notes.
The apex court also held that the Federal Government and the apex bank must not continue with the deadline pending the determination of the hearing on February 15
The outcome of the meeting is yet to be known but the visit by the apex bank chief is in connection to the ruling of the Supreme Court.
