Three dead, five injured, as police in Ethiopia shoot people protesting against water shortage
Security forces in the East African country of Ethiopian have killed at least three protesters when they fired at people protesting against shortage of water in the southern town of Wolkite.
Report says some five other people sustained injuries during the protests.
The residents were angered by the worsening water shortage in the town and held a protest in front of the city’s water management office.
“We have waited long to hold demonstrations. We came out today hoping we would get solutions. But things have turned into guns and blood,” one resident said.
Meanwhile, attempts to speak to district officials have not been successful.
President Muhammadu Buhari, Thursday, left Nigeria for Addis Ababa, in Ethiopia, to participate in the 36th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU).
The theme of the AU Summit is: ‘‘Acceleration of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Implementation.’’
The Nigerian leader is expected to deliver remarks at these events as well as present his National Statement at the opening session of the Summit, which brings together leaders from the AU member countries as well as a number of non-AU countries and international institutions accredited to the AU in Addis Ababa.
Buhari will be accompanied on the trip by some Ministers and other top government officials.
He is expected back in Abuja next Monday, February 20.
