Nigerian Twitter user exposes app used in making Obi/Oyedepo ‘deep fake’ audio leak (+video)
Nigerian Twitter user has exposed the computer software deployed by persons he described as ‘werey’ in making an alleged audio conversation between the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Dr Peter Obi and the Founder/General Overseer of the Living Faith Church Worldwide ()Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo.
According to the user, who goes with the handle (@aspic98y), producers of the audio leak deployed an application which is capable of reproducing and replacing the voice of any desired subject with another seamlessly using the same words spoken.
The revelation comes as chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and spokespersons of the Bola Tinubu Campaign Organisation have continued to insist that the leaked audio conversation is authentic, on the back of further admittance by the media aide of Peter Obi, Mr Kenneth Okonkwo , earlier, that the document is real.
While, Obi and Bishop Oyedpo have dismissed involvement in any audio conversation, supporters of the Labour Party candidate maintain that the leaked audio was not only fake and doctored but also a product of the APC propaganda machine.
The said audio leak involved a supposed conversation between Obi and Oyedepo where the former could be heard urging the cleric to use his influence to impress upon his members and other Christian faithful in the South West region to ensure a massive turnout of votes for him in the February 25 election.
In the purported audio phone conversation, Bishop Oyedepo began his prayer for the former governor of Anambra State by saying, “In Jesus’ name, we are going to get a bright tomorrow,” with Obi replying by saying, “When I hear these prayers, it is very dear to me and like I keep saying, if this thing works, you people will never regret the support.”
Continuing the conversation, Oyedepo said, “We look forward to God’s intervention,” to which Obi responded by saying, “Thank you, Daddy. I need you to speak to your people in the Southwest and Kwara. The Christians in the South West and Kwara.”
Bishop Oyedepo said: “Okay.”
Obi continued by saying, “This is a religious war,” with Oyedepo responding immediately, “I believe you, I believe that. You know, I did a release, ‘Nigeria going forward’ and I’m coming out with the second one today. You know what I said in the first one, a sickling nation like Nigeria requires a strong and healthy personality, and I said that anyone whose source of wealth cannot be verified should not have access to governance, particularly in an economy like Nigeria. I want to assure you that in the name of Jesus, the results shall be favourable,” Oyedepo said.
However, the authenticity of the audio tape has since been debunked by Obi and Oyedepo, who in separate statements, Sunday, denied holding any conversation of such, even as the cleric insists he has never campaigned for any politician.
Obi, in a statement signed by the Head, Obi-Datti Media, Diran Onifade and issued Sunday, described the audio document as ‘egregious mischief aimed at demarketing Peter Obi,’ adding that the party’s ‘ desperation grab and retain power by foul means has refused to go away more than a month after they have grabbed the election as they planned.’
“While we are toeing the constitutional path to retrieve our mandate, those who have truncated the wishes of the majority of Nigerians have recoursed to mischief and endless subterfuge to continue to hold on to what they know does not belong to them.
“From the show of shame in Portharcourt to the drama in the Ibom Air aircraft, both of which they contrived, they have now moved to the circulation of a deep fake audio file aimed at promoting religious tension in the country.
“All these are meant to serve no other purpose than egregious mischief aimed at demarketing Peter Obi. If the goal is to create a credibility problem, the ploy has failed woefully. Peter Obi has long been on record as the only presidential candidate who has urged the Nigerians electorate not to vote for him on the basis of religion or tribe.
“We will therefore like to advice our beloved Nigerian people to remain focused on the task to take back the mandate we know was freely given to Peter Obi and Datti Baba-Ahmed through legitimate means.
“That is more important than to expect those who ran election on forged credentials and even fake Bishops to stop faking. They cannot stop being fraudulent because that is who they are,” the party said.
On his part, Bishop Oyedepo, speaking during his regular Sunday sermon at the church’s headquarters in Otta, Ogun State, said he never campaigned for any politician or spoken on their behalf in the build-up to the 2023 General Elections in the country, though adding that ‘all political parties sought his prayers and advice before the election and he availed them.’
“I have never campaigned for anybody or spoken on anybody’s behalf and I will not do that till I go to heaven.
“There is no (political) party in this country that didn’t come to me for prayers and advice.
“I advised them, some, they didn’t take. Those who chose to take it saw results; those who said no are still going about it.
“If you still come again, I will still tell you, it doesn’t change,” Oyedepo said.
However, APC chieftains have pointed to the admittance by the Obi media spokesperson, Okonkwo as proof that the leaked audio tape is genuine.
Okonkwo had earlier, on Saturday, when it was leaked that the document was real but that his principal ‘did not attempt in any way to use religion as a tool rather that the APC which floated a Muslim-Muslim ticket did and should be accused of that.’
“Our attention has been drawn to the publication of this audio tape of private conversation between @peterobigregory and Bishop Oyedepo. It is not surprising that these political criminals are trying to spin the conversation as if Obi was making a religious statement.
“Firstly, the context of the conversation was aptly put by Bishop Oyedepo when he said “All Nigerians have equal stake in this nation, nobody has the right to claim that he is dashing something to someone”.
“His Excellency Peter Obi was simply urging the Bishop to help him push this message of equal stake of all Nigerians in the Nigerian project to his people and the Christendom because the politicians of the other party is carrying on this campaign as if it is a religious war.
“To drive home this point, he informed him that he visited the traditional ruler of Offa, the Olofa of Offa, who is a Muslim but who advised Obi to get the support of Oyedepo and be assured of his own support. No Politician has ever visited the Olofa of Offa
“It is clear to everybody that the APC political party that has a Presidential Candidate, Vice Presidential Candidate, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, National Chairman of the Party all from one religion at a time the CJN is a Muslim is the Party that has declared religious war on Nigerians and we must all rise up together to fight this unconstitutional act of religious intolerance of other religions by APC.
“I went around with Obi on the campaign train and never saw him discriminate against any religion. Of course he can’t because his Vice is a Muslim unlike APC. I resigned from APC because of their religious intolerance. Nigerians should disregard any insinuation of religious bigots about this tape,” Okonkwo’s statement read.
Reacting to the audio leak, a spokesperson of the Tinubu Campaign Organisation and former Minister of Aviation, Mr Femi Fani-Kayode, wrote via his Twitter handle, Sunday, that: “Now that the spokesman of Peter Obi, one Kenneth Okonkwo, has confirmed that the audio recording of the conversation between Bishop Oyedepo and his principal is authentic, it is time for us to call on the security agencies to declare Peter a master terrorist, a security risk, a man that is wholly unfit to lead a multi-religious, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural state and a hater of non-Christians.
“He is the indeed one of the “troublers” of our nation.
“Can you imagine what would have happened to Muslims if he had won the election?
“Within a few months he would have plunged Nigeria into a religious war.
“God really loves Nigeria.”
Following up with another statement, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment and a member of the Tinuub Media Campaign Directorate, Mr Festus Keyamo, in a statement titled; ‘PETER OBI’S DREAM TO BE PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA ONE DAY HAS JUST DIED A NATURAL DEATH,’ said the ‘real culprit here are the so-called ‘men of God’ who allowed themselves to be used by an unscrupulous politician to seek to inflame religious passions in our dear country in the name of politics.’
“Having confirmed the authenticity of what is now known as the Peter Obi ‘Yes-daddy’ audio, I think the real culprit here are the so-called ‘men of God’ who allowed themselves to be used by an unscrupulous politician to seek to inflame religious passions in our dear country in the name of politics. So, when they were telling their hapless adherents that they heard the voice of the Lord, it was actually Peter Obi’s telephone calls they heard and not God’s voice.
“This is deceitful, shameful and disgusting. Imagine a so-called ‘man of God’ comparing notes with a politician as to what he said or what he would say on the pulpit in order to get him votes. I hope this sufficiently embarrasses the ‘men of God’ in Nigeria to forthwith desist from using the pulpit for politics and the Church-goers to stop being teleguided by their self-serving ‘men of God’.
“As for Peter Obi who declared an election a ‘religious war’ in a multi-religious and multi-ethnic country like ours, the real God has just exposed him and his dream to be Nigeria’s President one day has just died a natural death. ‘Yes-daddy’ is now permanently etched in the consciousness of the nation and we will NEVER forget!”
On his part, Mr Reni Omokri, the former media aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, said the audio has been confirmed to be authentic by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)-standard equipment.
“Breaking: FBI Standard Equipment Confirms Voice In Audio To Be Peter Obi’s Voice,” said Reno Omokri
However, in all of the controversy surrounding the authenticity of the leaked audio tape, supporters of the LP candidate, popularly known as Obidients, exposed an app which they claimed was used to produce the tape shared by the APC propagandists.
According to Twitter user, (@aspic98y) the creators of the leaked audio used an app to manipulate voices of other people by replacing them with those of Obi and Oyedepo, using the same wordings:
“See the werey them did here. Spread and retweet so they know we caught them,” read the tweet.
Following the revelation, Nigerians trooped to Twitter to post their comments on the matter.

Kenneth Okonkwo is on his own! His thread is his personal opinion! I told him my mind, & relayed same to Peter Obi. The older generation should limit themselves to TV Appearances, leave Twitter rebuttals for the Obidients. We are more than capable of trashing ALL APC Propaganda.

Exactly! APC allowed a muslim-muslim ticket disrespecting the long standing status quo and someone is bringing out recording! What happened when a video recording of an islamic cleric was making the rounds? They should think of something else & be focused.
