NGX: Investors record N553.71bn loss as ASI decreases by 1.88%
Trading activities in the Nigeria Equity Market closed negative Wednesday as the NGX-ASI decreased by 1.88% to close at 53,018.97 compared to 54,035.39 recorded at the close of the previous trading day; indicating a YTD return of +3.45%
The market capitalization also decreased by N553.7 billion to N28.9 trillion from N29.44 trillion recorded at the previous trading day’s close, while the market turnover decreased to N2.67 billion from N3.07 billion.
At the end of today’s trading session, a total of 197,330,713 shares in 3,506 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 2,674,523,983.20, were traded.
Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Tuesday, April 4), today’s data shows 33% decline in volume, 13% decline in turnover, and 24% decline in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 28.9 trillion.
In the aggregate, 108 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 11 gainers and 14 losers. Wapic Insurance led the gainers with 7.5% share price appreciation closing at NGN 0.43 per share, followed by Mutual Benefits Assurance (+6.25%), Computer Warehouse Group (+5.26%) and Eterna (+4.46%).
On the losing side, Airtel Africa came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 10% at NGN 1,331.10 per share, followed by Ikeja Hotel (-9.85%), Multiverse Mining & Exploration (-9.59%) and Royal Exchange (-9.33%). United Bank for Africa recorded the highest volume of 64.2 million traded shares, followed by Transcorp Nigeria (32m), Zenith Bank (15.9m) and Oando (9.96m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) declined 1,016.42 (-1.88%) points to close at 53,018.97, representing a 1-week loss of 1.09%, a 4-week loss of 4.99%, but an overall year-to-date gain of 3.45%.
Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 50 Index (+0.3%; -2.24% 1WK; +4.17% YTD), NGX Top 30 Index (-1.74%; -1.2% 1WK; +2.66% YTD), NGX Insurance Index (+0.88%; +4.62% 1WK; +3.93% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+0.49%; +0.48% 1WK; +7.28% YTD), NGX Oil & Gas Index (+0.12%; +0.06% 1WK; +10.52% YTD), and NGX Premium Index (+0.1%; +3.29% 1WK; +11.84% YTD).
