Investors lose N79.08bn as NGX-ASI decreases by 0.23%
Nigeria’s Equities Market closed negative on Tuesday by -0.23% as the NGX-ASI decreased to 64,192.20 compared to 64,337.52 recorded at the close of the previous trading day; indicating a YTD return of +25.25%.
Market capitalization decreased for the day by N79.08 billion to N34.93 trillion from N35.01 trillion recorded at the close of the previous trading day, while the market turnover increased to N7.710 billion from N6.474 billion recorded at the close of the previous trading day.
At the end of today’s trading session, a total of 762,097,373 shares in 7,935 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 7,710,213,584.04, were traded.
Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Monday, July 31), today’s data shows 13% improvement in volume, 19% improvement in turnover, but 19% decline in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 34.9 trillion.
In the aggregate, 118 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 22 gainers and 37 losers. Dangote Sugar Refinery led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 29.70 per share, followed by Abbey Mortgage Bank (+10%), Chellarams (+9.87%) and Tantalizers (+9.68%).
On the losing side, John Holt came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 10% at NGN 1.80 per share, followed by Ellah Lakes (-9.92%), Fidelity Bank (-9.88%) and Japaul Gold and Ventures (-9.71%).
Aiico Insurance recorded the highest volume of 315 million traded shares, followed by United Bank for Africa (54.5m), AXA Mansard Insurance (48.8m) and Ecobank Transnational (41.9m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 145.32 (-0.23%) points to close at 64,192.20, representing a 1-week loss of 2.73%, a 4-week gain of 5.73%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 25.25%.
Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (-0.3%; -2.8% 1WK; +26.83% YTD), NGX Top 50 Index (-0.53%; -3.81% 1WK; +40.18% YTD), NGX Insurance Index (+0.95%; +0.73% 1WK; +50.96% YTD), NGX Consumer Goods Index (+0.54%; -3.23% 1WK; +45.74% YTD), NGX Oil & Gas Index (+0%; +6.27% 1WK; +101.4% YTD), and NGX Industrial Index (+0%; -0.23% 1WK; +18.36% YTD).
