Equities Market loses N58.48bn as NGX-ASI declines by 0.17%
Nigeria’s Equities Market closed negative on Tuesday by 0.17% as the NGX-ASI decreased to 64,928.98 compared to 65,210.49 recorded at the close of the previous trading day; indicating a YTD return of +26.90%.
Market capitalization decreased by N58.48 billion to N35.357 trillion from N35.415 trillion recorded at the close of the previous trading day, while the market turnover increased to N4.645 billion from N4.205 billion recorded at the close of the previous trading day.
At the end of today’s trading session on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX), a total of 280,468,742 shares in 6,296 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 4,645,346,446.26, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Monday, August 14), today’s data shows 8% improvement in volume, 10% improvement in turnover, and 7% improvement in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 35.3 trillion.
In the aggregate, 116 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 19 gainers and 31 losers. Tantalizers led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 0.44 per share, followed by Ikeja Hotel (+9.82%), Cornerstone Insurance Company (+9.3%) and The Initiates (+8.82%).
On the losing side, Eterna came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 9.86% at NGN 16.00 per share, followed by Sunu Assurances Nigeria (-9.62%), Omatek Ventures (-8.11%) and Unilever Nigeria (-7.05%). Transcorp Nigeria recorded the highest volume of 36.5 million traded shares, followed by United Bank for Africa (23.2m), Access Holdings (17.7m) and Sterling Bank (16m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) shed 281.51 (-0.43%) points to close at 64,928.98, representing a 1-week loss of 0.58%, a 4-week gain of 1.82%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 26.69%.
Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 50 Index (-0.22%; -0.95% 1WK; +41.99% YTD), NGX Top 30 Index (-0.43%; -0.41% 1WK; +28.42% YTD), NGX Insurance Index (+1.32%; +4.28% 1WK; +60.35% YTD), NGX Banking Index (-0.08%; -1.37% 1WK; +61.27% YTD), NGX Premium Index (-0.12%; -0.58% 1WK; +46.56% YTD), and NGX Pension Index (-0.22%; -0.71% 1WK; +53.64% YTD).
