40ft container trailer, ‘Tipper,’ cars in multiple vehicle accident in Lagos
Saturday afternoon accident on the Ikorodu Expressway in Lagos has left many casualties, some with serious injuries.
The accident involving a 40ft container truck, two Toyota Camry cars and a heavy-duty ‘Tipper’ truck fully loaded with sand, occurred between Anthony and Obanikoro busstops on the Ikorodu Expressway, in the afternoon of Saturday, July 19.
According to responders from the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency LASTMA), ‘casualties have been taken to the hospital’ form treatment, just as the agency did not disclose the number of injured persons.
“We just recorded a multiple accident at Anthony Inward Obanikoro on the main carriage way which involved a 40ft Laden truck, two Toyota Camry cars and a Tipper loaded with sand.
“Casualties have been taken to the hospital while our men are on ground to manage the traffic situation.
“Recovery of the affected vehicles is expected to be done soon,” the LASTMA report read.
LASTMA, in a statement confirming the accident, blamed it on over-speeding on the part of the container trailer, which it said collided with the other three vehicles.
“Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Saturday, rescued 3 accident victims in a multiple accident at Anthony inward Obanikoro area of Lagos.
LASTMA’s Lawal Hammed Babatunde ‘Eagle Bravo’ (Zone 11 Anthony) who led the rescue team confirmed that the multiple accident involved a 40ft container, 2 Toyota Camry cars (KRD 432 JA & APP 43 HN) and a tipper loaded with sand (T 17001LA).
“Babatunde confirmed further that those 3 rescued accident victims were trapped under the 40ft container.
“According to preliminary investigation, the 40ft container truck while on top speed collided with 3 other vehicles including a tipper fully loaded with sand as a result of brake failure.
“He disclosed further that those 3 rescued accident victims were immediately taken to nearby Hospital by members of their families,” the agency said.
