Arungwa trailer park project, not for Ruga – Abia State govt
From Boniface Okoro, Umuahia
Abia State government says that the ongoing Trailer Park project at Arungwa junction in Osisioma Local Government Area of the state has nothing to do with Ruga.
The Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr Chaka Chukwumerije, who gave the explanation during the briefing on the outcome of the Weekly Executive Council Meeting at Government House, Umuahia, said that the Trailer Park was a place of business, not a settlement.
The trailer park project was conceptualized by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Indigenes of the host communities kicked against the project, suspecting it to be a Ruga project for Fulani cattler herders in disguise.
But the Commissioner insisted the project has nothing to do with Ruga but meant to decongest traffic around Osisioma roundabout, Umuika junction and Owerinta bridge areas as well as generate revenue for the State.
“It is a standard trailer park, it is not a settlement. It is a place of business,” he said.
Chukwimerije’s explanation followed the disclosure by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu, that the trailer park project was on course, as the state government was assisting the federal government to actualise it.
Said the Commissioner: “Let me inform you that the Arungwa Trailer Park acquired by the Federal Government of Nigeria is being actualized by the state government, it is helping the Federal Government to build up that park.
“The park will serve the state and the residents and transporters. Once the trailer park is actualized, I will help to ease traffic around Ossiisioma roundabout, Umuikaa junction and around Owerrinta bridge. It is a very important project. It will ease of traffic around that axis.”
Kanu equally disclosed that government has started fencing the Lokpanta Cattle Market at Umuchieze in Umunneochi local government area with a view to achieving the policy of making the market a daily one and enhancing security in the local government.
