Observe experts’ recommendations to survive heatwave, govt. tells Abians
From Boniface Okoro, Umuahia
In the light of the climate change induced heatwaves, Abia State government has advised her citizens and residents to adhere strictly to the recommendations by the experts in order to survive the threat associated with the hot weather.
The advice is contained in an advisory issued by the newly created Department of Climate Change of the Ministry of Environment and Urban Renewal in Umuahia on Wednesday, endorsed by the Commissioner of the Ministry, Mr. Philemon Asomye Ogbonna.
.The recommendations by experts through which Nigerians could mitigate the harsh effects of climatic conditions, include that people should drink more water and stay hydrated, avoid more consumption of alcoholic beverages and caffeinated beverages, reduce intake of food rich in proteins because they increase metabolic activities as fresh foods and fruits are better alternatives, stay indoors between 12 noon and 4:30pm, take cold bath before going to bed at night and monitor their blood pressure always.
These recommendations were made by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) which had advised on how to prepare for the change in climatic conditions.
Adverse effect of the current situation, the advisory noted, ranges from dehydration which can lead to fainting, contacting of chicken pox, heat rashes and mental stress. Also associated with heat-waves are skin cancer, meningitis and, in the worst case scenario, death.
Abia state government explained the advisory became necessary because it was greatly concerned over the recent changes in the climate, resulting in heatwaves during both the day and night.
“While the State government is reassuring the people of its commitment to their welfare and security, Abians are reminded that health is wealth and that they should do all they can to live a healthy life,” Ogbonna stated.
