Equity investors record N8.34bn loss as NGXASI declines by 0.02%
Nigeria’s Equities Market closed negative on Friday as the NGX-ASI decreased to 98,233.76 from 98,255.72 recorded at the close of the previous trading day; indicating a YTD return of +31.37%
The market performance for the week decreased by -0.02% to 98,233.76 from 99,587.25 recorded at the beginning of the week.
Similarly, the market capitalization decreased by N8.34 billion to N55.561 trillion from N55.570 trillion recorded at the close of the previous trading day, While the market turnover decreased to N7.521 billion from N16.664 billion.
At the end of the last weekday of trading , a total of 344,376,189 shares in 8,497 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 7,521,733,496.50, were traded.
Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Thursday, May 9), today’s data shows 49% decline in volume and 55% decline in turnover. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 55.6 trillion.
In the aggregate, 127 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 26 gainers and 26 losers. Honeywell Flour Mill led the gainers with 9.97% share price appreciation closing at NGN 3.31 per share, followed by Guinea Insurance (+9.68%), International Energy Insurance (+9.63%) and Tantalizers (+9.52%).
On the losing side, AXA Mansard Insurance came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 10% at NGN 5.13 per share, followed by PZ Cussons Nigeria (-9.9%), Eterna (-9.9%) and McNichols (-9%). United Bank for Africa recorded the highest volume of 90.1 million traded shares, followed by Access Holdings (39.6m), Zenith Bank (35.1m) and AXA Mansard Insurance (13m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 21.96 (-0.02%) points to close at 98,233.76, representing a 1-week loss of 1.36%, a 4-week loss of 4.67%, but an overall year-to-date gain of 31.37%.
