Ebonyi Gov Nwifuru stresses importance of grassroots development
Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has called on his colleagues who are yet to conduct Local Government elections to do so to drive development to the grassroots.
He made the appeal while fielding questions from journalists after casting his vote at Edukwu okemini polling unit, Oferekpe, Izzi Local Government Area.
The Governor and wife , Uzoamaka voted at their polling unit at exactly 11: 30am.
He emphasized that elections will enable the Chairmen to operate with the mandate of their people.
” I believe in democratically elected Chairmen in the Local Government system because that is what the Constitution says.
Some people will say that the constitution provides that the State Assembly should make laws for the administration of the Local Government system, but the constitution says Local Government should be democratically elected “
“Even if the State Assembly is making laws for the Local Government, any law that runs inconsistent with the constitution is null and void to the level of that inconsistency ‘ the Governor explained.
He commended the electorate for coming out in their numbers despite the rain to exercise their franchise, describing the election as orderly and peaceful.
The election holds simultaneously in the thirteen Local Government Councils and 171 Electoral Wards in the State.
