Equity investors lose N92.73bn as NGXASI declines by 0.17%;
Nigeria’s equities market closed negative on Monday as the NGX-ASI decreased to 97,582.41 from 97,745.73 recorded at the close of the previous trading day; indicating a YTD return of +30.50%.
Market capitalization also decreased by N92.73 billion to N55.405 trillion from N55.497 trillion recorded at the close of the previous trading day. The market turnover also increased to N6.218 billion from N3.951 billion.
At the end of the first weekday, a total of 324,019,567 shares in 9,738 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 6,217,761,055.01, were traded.
Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Friday, August 2), today’s data shows 54% improvement in volume, 57% improvement in turnover, and 47% improvement in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 55.4 trillion.
In the aggregate, 120 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 23 gainers and 25 losers. Presco led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 485.10 per share, followed by International Breweries (+10%), Sovereign Trust Insurance (+10%) and Oando (+9.88%).
On the losing side, Chams came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 10% at NGN 1.98 per share, followed by University Press (-9.92%), The Initiates (-8.26%) and Omatek Ventures (-8.2%). Zenith Bank recorded the highest volume of 37 million traded shares, followed by United Bank for Africa (35m), Veritas Kapital Assurance (25.5m) and Oando (20.3m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 163.32 (-0.17%) points to close at 97,582.41, representing a 1-week loss of 0.56%, a 4-week loss of 2.42%, but an overall year-to-date gain of 30.5%.
