Bearish trend persists at NGX as equities investors lose N65bn,ASI declines by 0.12%
Nigeria’s equities market closed negative on Thursday as the NGX-ASI decreased to 95,718.05 from 95,831.51 recorded at the close of the previous trading day; indicating a YTD return of +28.01%.
Market capitalization decreased by N65 billion to N54.982 trillion from N55.047 trillion recorded at the close of the previous trading day. The market turnover decreased to N5.853 billion from N7.252 billion.
At the end of today’s trading session , a total of 393,620,711 shares in 8,243 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 5,853,798,389.45, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Wednesday, August 21), today’s data shows 9% improvement in volume, 19% decline in turnover, and 6% decline in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 55 trillion.
In the aggregate, 121 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 22 gainers and 18 losers. Skye Shelter Fund led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 122.65 per share, followed by Academy Press (+10%), Oando (+9.99%) and RT Briscoe (+9.78%). On the losing side, Transcorp Hotels came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 10% at NGN 90.00 per share, followed by Chams (-9.72%), Eterna (-9.55%) and Ikeja Hotel (-9.09%). Universal Insurance Company recorded the highest volume of 68.2 million traded shares, followed by Chams (33.8m), Oando (29.8m) and Transcorp Nigeria (28.1m).
Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) pared 113.46 (-0.12%) points to close at 95,718.05, representing a 1-week loss of 1.42%, a 4-week loss of 4.43%, but an overall year-to-date gain of 28.01%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (-0.16%; -1.62% 1WK; +26.96% YTD), NGX Insurance Index (+0.44%; +0.6% 1WK; +22.18% YTD), NGX Industrial Index (+0%; -4.89% 1WK; +42.1% YTD), NGX Pension Index (-0%; -0.79% 1WK; +15.29% YTD), NGX Premium Index (-0.03%; -4.99% 1WK; +21.67% YTD), and NGX Consumer Goods Index (-0.11%; -1.54% 1WK; +36.48% YTD).
