Abia to reconstruct Omenuko bridge

Abia State Executive Council (EXCO) has approved the reconstruction of the dilapidated Omenuko bridge at Ozu Abam in Arochukwu Local Government Area of the state.
The EXCO gave the approval during its weekly meeting on Monday Presided over the state governor, Dr. Alex Otti.
The iconic colonial bridge which links Abia North and Abia Central senatorial zones, has been in a poor shape for decades, a situation that leaves commuters in utmost fear each time they have to cross the bridge which is on a federal road.
“For decades, a lot of politicians have taken undue advantage of the rickety nature of that bridge to make promises to people around that area. Till date, they have never fulfilled such promises,” the Commissioner said.
“His Excellency, Dr Alex Otti, has ordered that that bridge be reconstructed to serve the people from that area,” he added.
The Commissioner said that the project would be flagged off soon, maintaining that repairing the bridge would be of great benefit to the people.
He also announced that Abia State won $400, 000 UNICEF-organised primary health care event and said that the credit really goes to Governor Otti for his efforts in the health sector.
According to him, the retrofitting of 200 Primary Health Centres across the state in 100 days christened “Project Ekwueme” was ongoing.
He further disclosed that the “Light Up Abia Initiative” was still ongoing, saying that the focus used to be on the major cities of Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia but now, it has shifted to other areas, including Bende, Ugwunagbo and Osisioma local government areas. He said that so far, the Light Up Abia Initiative has have reached 28 areas.
The Commissioner reiterated the commitment of the state government to providing security, especially this Yuletide and emphasised the need for people to always give useful information to the security agencies.
