Abia jacks up IGR target to N120bn

Buoyed by its excellent performance in generation of internal revenue, Abia State government has jacked up it expedted Internally Generated Revenue in 2025 to N120 billion.

Recall that in 2024, the government set for itself, an IGR target of N32 billion. But in the end, the government surpassed that target by N7 billion, as it raked in N39 billion.
Commissioner for Information, Prince Okay Kanu, who made this known while briefing the Press in Umuahia, expressed the hope that for 2025, the state would do much more better.
“It has to be put on record that in the past year, the state surpassed its set target in that regard. In the 2025 budget, the state government has planned to scale up its IGR base by targeting about N120 billion, which amounts to about 207 percent increase, over the IGR target of the previous year.
To realize the target, Prince Kanu said that the state would apply a lot of reforms.
“Consequently, the state government is embarking on a number of reforms initiated to achieve this and to ensure that Abia State citizens are better served through more developmental programmes and initiatives,” the Commissioner said.
The Commissioner also disclosed that the state has adopted a deliberate policy of providing ramps in all public buildings and special parking lots in the state for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). The decision was taken during the two-day celebration ot Abia State Disabilities Day.
The Commissioner said that to cap the celebration for this year coordinated by the Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Disabled Persons, the state government has to tke the decision, in order to enhance mobility of PwDs.
The information Commissioner also disclosed that because government plans to develop an equitable and functional protection policy system that protects the most vulnerable groups in the state with a view to addressing poverty, unemployment and social tensions, the state has reviewed the draft document for the Abia State Social Protection Policy.
According to him, the policy was reviewed last week during a workshop in collaboration with relevant implementation stakeholders to provide social security for its citizens.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma, his education counterpart, Sir Kenechukwu Nwosu and Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Njoku Ukoha Njoku, were part of the briefing.
