Again, police extend enforcement deadline on tinted glass permit
Barely 24 hours to the commencement of the planned enforcement of Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) requirement for vehicles in the country, the Nigeria police have again extended the grace period for motorists, citing ‘significant surge in applications via the official portal.’

The police had in May, this year announced Monday,June 1 as original date to commence enforcing the directive. It later shifted the planned exercise to August 12, 2025.
Making the disclosure in a statement, Monday, the police confirmed October 2, 2025 as the new date for the commencement of enforcement on the directive which required motorists using tinted windows to obtain permits with the security agency or face prosecution.
Police spokesperson, Mr Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the development in a statement, added that the Inspector General, Mr Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has now approved a further extension of the grace period for vehicles with tinted windows, and also set October 2, this year, as the new date.
According to Mr Egbetokun, the decision to extend the enforcement date was due to what he described as ‘a significant surge in applications via the official portal, which he noted was a reflection of the ‘heightened public compliance with the directive.’
Egbetokun, in approving an extension of the enforcement date, said the police considered it ‘imperative to allow sufficient time for the meticulous scrutiny of applications to ensure that the permit is issued only to eligible and qualified individuals, in line with national security considerations.’
The police chief, further noted that the extension ‘will also provide room for the continued fine-tuning of verification processes, both digital and physical, to maintain the integrity of the permit system and prevent abuse,’ just as he warned personnel against extorting motorists
“The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms that the authorized platform for the application remains possap.gov.ng and advises citizens to disregard any unofficial channels.
“Members of the public are further encouraged to report all forms of extortion, hidden charges, or unauthorized processing to the appropriate police authorities,” the statement read.
The police further added that while it appreciates the cooperation of the Nigerian people, they ‘remain committed to balancing public convenience with robust security measures for the safety of all.’
It would be recalled that in May, this year, the police announced Monday,June 1, 2025 as date to commence enforcement of its reactivated Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) system, concluding a 30-day grace period granted to drivers for compliance with the new regulations.
This initiative, ordered by Egbetokun, forms part of a wider strategy aimed at bolstering national security and mitigating criminal activities often associated with vehicles featuring darkened windows.
According to the police, the reintroduction of the tinted glass permit was prompted by numerous complaints from motorists regarding harassment by law enforcement, alongside worries about the misuse of tinted vehicles in crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and others.
The new system seeks to differentiate between legitimate users such as those with medical conditions needing reduced sunlight exposure and criminals who exploit tinted vehicles to avoid detection.
