Akwa Ibom celebrates WTD 2024 with boat regatta, fishing festival, others, Friday

Akwa Ibom State is now set to host a boat regatta, fishing festival, in addition to unveiling some slave heritage sites, in commemoration of the World Tourism Day (WTD) celebration, Friday.
The WTD, as recognised by the United Nations (UN), is commemorated annually on September 27 across the globe by countries, with the theme for this year’s edition being; ‘Tourism and Peace.’
State’s Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Sir Charles Udoh, who disclosed the level of preparedness of the state ahead of the global celebrations, Thursday, in Uyo, further promised that the show in Akwa Ibom ‘will be a spectacle to behold,’ just as he extended a special invitation to the political class, organised private sector (OPS) and other operators in the tourism and hospitality industry in the state.
According to Sir Udoh, the boat regatta which has been slated for the Marina Beach, Nwaniba, in Uyo, the state capital, by 2pm, is organized as part of activities to commemorate the WTD in the state.
The commissioner further disclosed that three communities have finalized their preparations and already in top gear to provide a spectacle during the boat regatta.
He listed the communities as; Nwaniba, Mbiakong and Ifiayong, even as he disclosed that exciting prizes will be won by the communities, in addition to other numerous consolation rewards for other participants.
“The ceremony is expected to have His Excellency the Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, as the Special Guest of Honour, and will also feature the unveiling of the restored Slave Boat and the Slave Memorial Park.
“The WTD celebration will commence with a float roadshow with cultural displays from the Ibom Plaza to empty at the Nwaniba beach where the audience will be thrilled by two of our best homegrown artistes; Disasta and Mr. Amanam,” the commissioner added.
State’s of the Federation in the country are also expected to commemorate the occasion with various forms of activities, in line with the global theme of the celebrations.
