Anambra South: Group endorses LP candidate, may scuttle Ifeanyi Ubah , Chris Ubah ambitions
By Oliver Udeogu
The quest by Senator Ifeanyi Ubah to return to the Senate in 2023 and that of political kingmaker in the State, Chief Chris Ubah, may be scuttled as a powerful group known as Oga Ndi Oga endorsed the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Dr Obinna Uzoh for Anambra South Senatorial district.
The two Ubahs are said to be major contenders for the Senatorial zone .
It was gathered that because of the endorsement of Dr.Uzoh by the group, Senator Ubah ,who is the candidate of Young Peoples Party (YPP) and Chris Ubah , the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are facing ‘danger’ over possible defeats at the polls.
This is following the endorsement of Dr. Uzoh by a member of Board of Trustees (BOT) of the LP and the party’s leader in the Southeast Zone Hon Godwin Agbasimelo.
Agbasimelo who is the founder of a popular group in the state known as ‘Oga Ndi Oga’, who endorsed Uzoh as the choice for the Senate at a ceremony held at Melie Onyejepu Development Center, Nnewi on Thursday, vowed to mobilise members of the support group in the seven local government areas in the Anambra South Senatorial district, to vote Dr.Uzoh into the Senate, in the February 25 election.
Agbasimelo who presented Dr. Uzoh to the leaders of the LP in the seven local government areas declared that he has thrown his weight behind Dr. Uzoh and other candidates of the party for the 2023 polls, to ensure that the presidential candidate of the party, Mr Peter Obi will have enough LP members to work with at the National Assembly, when he wins as president.
Agbasimelo said he was sure Obi would win the February polls, while adding that he is mobilising support not just to deliver the LP candidate, but to position the party towards taking over the governorship seat of Anambra State in subsequent elections in the state.
He assured Uzoh that the LP has the numerical strength in Anambra South District, to vote him to victory at the polls, while urging him to work closely with leaders of the party, who have come to receive him.
In his response, Uzoh said he is in the race to fight for the turn of Ihiala bloc in Anambra South, while noting that Ihiala is the only bloc among the three blocs in the district that has yet to produce a Senator.
According to him “we have three blocs in Anambra South which includes Nnewi, Aguata and Ihiala. Nnewi and Aguata have had representatives at the Senate since 1999, leaving Ihiala behind which is not fair”.
Uzoh told the foundation that he has been a philanthropist all his life and that as a Senator, he would ensure that Anambra South will be well represented with attraction of dividends of democracy to the constituents.
“All my life I have been a philanthropist; I have been helping people like the youth, mothers, widows and others to engage in meaningful activities to earn a living.
“ I built a Church in Ihiala for the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi; I built a hostel for the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha at Amansea, another hostel at Madonna University. I have given scholarship to a lot of children up to university level and I will continue to do so because that’s my calling. So if you vote me in to the Senate ,I will not disappoint you,” he said.
