APC national chairmanship aspirant Ali Modu Sheriff pledges to support President’s candidate
Former Governor of Borno State and front line aspirant for the National Chairmanship position of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator Ali Modu Sheriff says he will support any candidate that President Muhammadu Buhari nominates as the National Chairman of the party.
Senator Sheriff said this in a press briefing in Abuja.
He, however, noted that the President had made no official statement nominating any aspirant for the position; neither has the party communicated with him regarding any nomination.
“Lately, I have been inundated by insinuations and rumours that President Muhammadu Buhari has zoned and endorsed a candidate for this all-important position in our party’s leadership.
“Firstly, I am not aware of any official statement or position by Mr President on the endorsement of any candidate or/and zoning of the Chairmanship position of our great party. Mr President and the party is yet to issue a formal statement on this.
“I am in the race for the National Chairmanship position of our party APC because of my strength of character, capacity and competence. My intentions are clear and explicitly for the public good rather than self-interest.
“As a loyal party member, I will abide by decisions of Mr President. Whenever he makes an official decision on zoning or endorsement of a candidate, I have absolute confidence in Mr President’s capacity to make the right choice for the growth of our party.
I am also totally committed to working with anyone and everyone to reposition our party towards actualising resounding victory in 2023 general elections and beyond,” he said.
He added that if elected as the APC National Chairman, his guiding principle is because of the party’s constitution and manifesto.
APC has set March 26 to hold its National Convention, where members of the National Working Committee will be elected.
There have been many negotiations on the zoning of the different party positions to various geopolitical regions of Nigeria. Also, there are negotiations to nominate an individual based on consensus for the party’s National Chairmanship position.
