The crisis rocking the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Imo State has taken a worse dimension as some members of the State Working Committee (SWC) on Tuesday slammed indefinite suspension on the state chairman, Barr Peter Ezeobi, over what they said were fraud, high-handedness and anti-party activities.
In a letter of suspension signed by 10 members of the State Working Committee, the aggrieved members said the state chairman was responsible for the dwindling fortunes of the party in the state, pointing out that since he took over as the chairman the party has not had it good.
The group also accused the state chairman of being responsible for the poor outing of the party in the 2015 governorship election where the party got about 28,000 votes from the 27 local governments of the state.
In a letter dated November 6, 2018 and addressed to the state chairman, the State Working Committee said: “Since your emergence as the Chairman of our great party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance Imo State, you have consistently acted in a manner that is inimical to the fortunes of the party in the state”.
The party recalled that in 2015 the state chairman led the party “to its worst electoral misfortune with a total of twenty eight thousand votes statewide and the party could not win even one state constituency”, adding that under him some members of the SWC collected money from the PDP and worked against the interest of the party in the 2015 governorship election.
The members of the SWC said that the interest of the state chairman in the part is to make money and not win elections: “Needless to say, your primary goal is the money you make from the party and to retain your position as the state chairman and not to win election”, adding that the state chairman had always harassed anyone who opposed his views.
According to the suspension letter, the SWC alleged that the state chairman had suspended several local government chairmen for flimsy reasons to weaken the party, adding that he has not allowed the state financial secretary of the party to do his job, stressing that the state chairman is rather performing the functions of the state financial secretary.
“Your anti-party activities came to a climax in defiance of the party guidelines to conduct congresses and elect delegates. Instead, you chose harmonization of delegate list with the sole purpose of manipulating the process of electing candidates for the party. The reputation and the entire hope of the party have been dragged to the mud and the entire party tickets sold out to APC members even where APGA members emerged”, the party said.
However, the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Dr. George Nkwoji, has dismissed the suspension slammed on the state chairman. In a telephone conversation with The Oracle Today in Owerri on Wednesday, he said that 10 persons out of the whole members of the SWC cannot remove the state chairman.
He said that those who purportedly suspended the state chairman are those who are loyal to a certain governorship aspirant of the party, adding that they are leaving the party for another party but wanted to create crisis to pave the way for their exit.
He wondered why they went to a hotel to hold the meeting where they purportedly removed the state chairman instead of the state secretariat of the party.
