Appeal Court withdraws ex-Gov. Kalu’s Abia State University degree certificate
Appeal Court in Owerri, Tuesday, vacated an earlier judgement delivered by a state High Court in Isuikwuato which had restored the Bachelor’s degree certificate awarded to former governor, Orji Uzor Kalu by the Abia State University (ABSU).
The university had withdrawn the certificate it awarded to the former governor of the state alleging fraud and breach of admission regulations against Kalu on graduation from the institution.
However, the former governor, now senator representing the Northern Senatorial District of the state had approached the state High Court in Isuikwuato seeking the restoration of his certificate, which the court granted.
In its ruling, Tuesday, the Appeal Court in Owerri, Imo State, dismissed the judgement by the lower court citing lack of jurisdiction to adjudicate on the matter.
The appellant court upheld the withdrawal of the Bachelors’ degree certificate of the former governor by the Abia State University.
Presiding judge, Justice Oludotun Adefope-Okojie, dismissed the earlier judgement of a high court which had restored the Bachelors’ degree certificate of the former governor.
Justice Adefope Okojie in her verdict said that the Isuikwuato high court had no jurisdiction to preside over the certificate issue.
The appellate court held that Senator Kalu ought to have exhausted all the remedies available to him before approaching the court to challenge the decision of the Senate of Abia State University to strip him off the degree certificate.
