Buhari inaugurates Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri rail line

President Muhammadu Buhari has formally inaugurated the 326km-long Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri rail line for commercial operation, as well as the ancillary facilities yard, at the recently-named Goodluck Jonathan Railway Complex in Agbor (Owa-Oyibu), Delta State.

The virtual opening took place, Tuesday for the rail line linking Itakpe to Warri.

Also, the President directed the Federal Ministry of Transportation to link all the nation’s ports of origin and destination – Apapa, Tin Can, Warri, Onne, Calabar Ports – to the rail network

According to buhari, this is in order to significantly improve overall transportation and economic capacities.

The President declared that his administration recognised the importance of the railway mode of transportation as a vital backbone to support industrialization and economic development.

The rail line runs through three states; Kogi, Edo and Delta.

Earlier, Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, welcomed the members of the Federal Executive Council and other guests who were in the State for the commissioning of the Itakpe-Warri rail-line at the Goodluck Jonathan Railway Complex, Owa-Oyibu.

Meanwhile, President Buhari has asked the Senate to approve N148.1bn payment to Ondo, Rivers, Cross-River, Osun, and Bayelsa states.

A letter to that effect read at the floor of the Senate, Tuesday, by Ahmed Lawan, the senate president, said the amount was the reimbursement of the federal roads project they executed in their states.

The breakdown of the money included, Rivers (N78.9bn), Bayelsa (N38.4bn), Cross River (N18.3bn), Ondo (N7.8bn), and Osun (N4.5bn).

He said the lawmakers would devote October for budget defence while November will be for the internal processing of the document.
